Walking Bus Safety Reminders

Discuss these reminders together for the first couple of trips, and review as needed.

  1. Stay behind the leader. Kids may walk beside the parent leader, but no one passes them.
  2. Stay together. Small gaps are okay, but everyone should be able to hear the leader. One adult leads from the front, and if available, have one in the back.
  3. Use the sidewalk. Keep away from traffic as much as is reasonable.
  4. Stop before crossing and confirm drivers see the group. If no crossing guard is present, make eye contact with drivers and wait until they stop. The parent leader should use the high-visibility crossing flag from the starter safety kit.
  5. Keep eyes up and ears open. Put phones and headphones away. Watch especially for cars coming out of driveways and cars turning.
