Bike Bus Safety Reminders
Discuss these reminders together for the first couple of trips, and review as needed.
- Stay behind the leader. Kids may ride beside the parent leader, but no one passes them.
- Stay to the right. Ride no more than two across, leave room for parked-car doors, and let cars pass on your left.
- Ride at a steady, relaxed pace. No racing.
- Stop at every intersection and crossing. If no crossing guard is present, make eye contact with drivers and wait until they stop.
- Wear a helmet and leave e-bikes at home. But do not turn away a kid who does not bring a helmet.
- Place adults at the front and back. Always have one adult at the front and another at the back. Additional adults may ride within the group or along its outside edge.
- Use sidewalks only as connectors. Drivers may not see riders on sidewalks in time, especially at driveways, and riding near pedestrians can be unsafe.
- Use the bike lane when there is one. Ride single file and try to stay in the middle of the lane.
- Walk bikes near people on foot. As the group approaches school or a crowded walkway, get off and walk.
